What is a lawyer & What to look for when hiring a lawyer?
A ‘lawyer’ is a person who provides legal advice, represents you in negotiations and at times if necessary, represents you in court. A lawyer is a general term used to define practitioners working in the legal profession including barristers, solicitors, registered foreign lawyers, patent attorneys, trade mark attorneys, licensed conveyancers, commissioners for oaths, immigration advisors and claims management services [Legal Services Act 2007]. This definition can also extend to people who are involved with the law but do not practice it on behalf of individual clients such as judges, court clerks, and drafters of legislation.

When hiring a lawyer it is important to ensure you retain someone who has a depth of knowledge and speciality in the area of your legal problem. Where both parties to a problem are represented by sensible experienced lawyers, the matter is more likely to be resolved quickly and without unnecessary costs and stress to all parties.

It is also important for you to be comfortable with the person you are trusting with your legal problem and feeling as though you trust them.

Finally make sure you discuss costs at the initial consultation and approximate costs at each possible stage of the matter. If your lawyer is unwilling to be upfront about the likely costs of proceeding with your matter there will usually be a reason why.
