Many people have insurance policies included in their superannuation accounts. These policies can include Total Permanent Disability claims (or TPD Claims). They may also include salary continuance or income protection claims.

What is a TPD claim?

TPD claims are designed to provide protection to you if you are unable to return to work or can no longer work in a role that you are trained, skilled or experienced in. You do not have to have had an accident to be entitled to a claim. You can also claim if you develop a disease or illness.

I have more than one superannuation policy and they each have an insurance policy. Can I claim against all of them?

Yes. You can claim against multiple TPD insurances and recover the insured sum from each of them.

What is a salary continuance or income protection claim?

These policies are designed to provide you with a replacement income if you cannot work.

Often, the replacement income is a percentage of your actual income (eg 75% of the income you had before you stopped working). They also usually have a waiting period.

The policy will indicate how long the total benefits last for. Some might be a two year benefit. Others might give you benefits to a set age (e.g. until age 65).

I have a motor vehicle, public liability or workers compensation claim. Can I bring a superannuation insurance claim as well?

Yes. You are entitled to pursue your negligence claim as well as the insurance claim under your superannuation.

If you are receiving workers compensation weekly benefits, then your salary continuance/income protection claim may be reduced by the amount that you are receiving in workers compensation.
