Sport related visas often need to be processed urgently, with athletes and officials required to travel worldwide under strict time constraints. These high pressure situations can result in mistakes, delays, and unnecessary refusals. For this reason, understanding the correct Australian sport visa options is essential for anyone entering the country to compete or participate in training.

This guide explains the main Australian visa options available to athletes, coaches, and sporting officials and outlines the requirements for each subclass.

If you are an athlete, coach, or official wishing to visit Australia, there are several visa pathways designed to support high level sporting participation and skill development.

Temporary Activity Subclass 408 Visa

Sporting Activities Stream

This visa allows applicants to play, coach, instruct, or adjudicate for an Australian team, or participate in high-level sports training within a sporting organisation. With this visa, you can stay for up to two years and can bring members of your family with you, provided that you do not undertake any other work other than the approved sporting activity.

You do not need a sponsor to apply for this visa if you apply outside of Australia and intend to stay in Australia for less than three months, but you do require a supporter who passes the support test.

If you do apply for this visa in Australia and intend to stay for more than three months, you will require a sponsor who is an approved temporary activities sponsor to apply.
